ThioflavinT(ThT),alsocalledBasicYellow1orCI49005,isabenzothiazolesalt.Thedyeisusedtovisualizeplaquescomposedofbeta-amyloidfoundinthebrainsofAlzheimer"sdiseasepatients.Whenitbindstobetasheets,suchasthoseinamyloidoligomers,thedyeundergoesacharacteristic120nmredshiftofitsexcitationspectrumthatmaybeselectivelyexcitedat450nm,resultinginafluorescencesignalat482nm.ThTbindsrapidlyandspecificallytotheanti-parallelbeta-sheetfibrilsformedfromsyntheticbeta-amyloid(1-40),butdoesnotbindtomonomeroroligomericintermediates.ThebindingofThTdoesnotinterferewiththeaggregationofbeta-amyloidpeptideintoamyloidfibrils.ThioflavinTacidisavalubletoolformakingvariousbioconjugatesofThioflavinTthatcandirectThioflavinTtoadesiredtarget.ItisanessentialreagenttomakethepeptidesandotherconjugatesofThioflavinT.
